Derry Medical Center and Londonderry Family Practice Center Awards $1,000 Scholarships to Graduating High School Students
Derry Medical Center (DMC) and Londonderry Family Practice Center (LFPC) recently awarded three educational scholarships to graduating seniors from Pinkerton Academy, Londonderry High School and Salem High School. The awards were in the amount of $1000 each.
Lynn Della Grotta, recent graduate of Londonderry High School; Tatyana Kirichok, graduate of Pinkerton Academy; and Cory Lavallee, graduate of Salem High School, were this year’s recipients of the DMC/LFPC annual scholarship award. These outstanding students met the scholarship’s conditions, which require that the recipient rank in the top 25 percent of his or her class and plan to pursue a career in the healing art of medicine.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to give back to our community in a way that supports tomorrow’s medical professionals,” said Dennis G. Rork, M.D., a board certified Family Practice Physician practicing at the Londonderry Family Practice Center.
The $1,000 awards allow the students to use the funds toward future educational expenses. This fall, Grotta will be attending Brown University in preparation for a pre-med major. Kirichok will be attending the University of New Hampshire as a nursing major and hopes to become a nurse practitioner. Lavallee will be attending Clarkson University, majoring in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Biomedical Engineering.

Silent Auction Supports Cancer Walkers – Proceeds to Benefit Susan G. Komen For the Cure
Staff members from Derry Medical Center, Derry Imaging Center, and Londonderry Family Practice have again made a commitment to participate in the Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day as part of a national effort to raise money for breast cancer research. This year’s walk will be held in Boston from July 24-26, and the DMC team, Breast Friends For Life, will be led by team captain Elisa Mecuro, DO.
Julie McGinnis, Physician Assistant at Derry Medical Center, has participated in the walk the past four years. She says, “We currently have 14 walkers and 2 crew members participating in this event. When each walker commits to the 3-Day, they are pledging to walk 60 miles over three days. In addition, each walker has to raise $2300 in donations.”
To help reach this goal, Derry Medical Center and Spindel Eye Associates will be holding a Silent Auction and Penny Raffle on Friday, June 26 beginning at 6:00 PM at the Overlook Medical Park at 6 Tsienneto Road in Derry. Organizers hope to collect over 100 auction and raffle items, with all proceeds donated to the Breast Cancer 3 Day. The event is open to the public and admission is free. It will be a fun evening with music and light appetizers, and a wonderful way to help support a great cause!”
In order to reach their goal, DMC Breast Friends for Life are asking the community for their support in the form of a product or service donation for their auction and penny raffle. “In years past, we have received various items of value including event tickets, gift certificates, hand made items, and gift baskets. Each donation will be clearly labeled as a gift from your business and will give your business exposure to hundreds of attendees as the event will be advertised locally” says McGinnis.
Since its inception in 2003, more than $220 million has been raised through Breast Cancer 3-Day donations, contributions and sponsorships. Eighty-five percent of the net proceeds of this event go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Advancements in breast cancer research, treatment, education and prevention in the last 25 years have been touched by a Komen for the Cure grant. The remaining fifteen percent of net funds goes to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund to provide a permanent endowment for ongoing support of breast cancer initiatives.
Breast cancer is the leading cancer among American women with an estimated 40,460 women and 450 men will die from breast cancer in 2008. Surprisingly, only 5 to 10 percent of breast cancers are due to heredity. The majority of women with breast cancer have no known significant family history or other known risk factors.

If you’d like to join or support the DMC/LFP team or if you would like to donate an item to the Silent Auction and Penny Sale, contact Julie McGinnis at 537-1370 or via email at jmcginnis@derrymedicalcenter.com.
