ADA logoDiabetes Healthcare of New Hampshire at Derry Medical Center Earns Prestigious Recognition

November 15, 2009 - Diabetes Healthcare of New Hampshire at Derry Medical Center was recently awarded the Education Recognition Certificate by the American Diabetes Association. The Association’s Education Recognition Certificate assures that educational programs meet the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs.

Programs that achieve Recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health care professionals who can provide participants with comprehensive information about their diabetes management. “Programs apply for Recognition voluntarily,” says James M. Harris, Jr., MS, APRN, BC-ADM, Director of Diabetes Healthcare of New Hampshire. “The process gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of services they provide, and of course, gives patients the assurance that they are receiving high quality care.”

Diabetes Healthcare of New Hampshire at Derry Medical Center provides a wide range of services for patients. Diabetes management includes: a complete nutritional assessment, individualized exercise program, necessary laboratory and diagnostic testing, appropriate adjustments of medication regimens and a comprehensive evaluation and treatment of cardiovascular risk factors.

The backbone of Diabetes Care is teaching Self Management skills for long-term control as provided by Lori Muller, RD, CDE, a diabetes educator. “We focus on skills including blood glucose monitoring and interpreting results; healthy eating and meal planning; reducing risks and complications; physical activity; stress management; problem solving and coping skills,” says Muller. “We really encourage our patients to be part of their own healthcare team when it comes to treatment and decision-making.”

The American Diabetes Association is the nation’s leading non-profit organization supporting diabetes research, advocacy and information for health professionals, patients and the public. Founded in 1940, the Association has an area office in every state and conducts programs in communities nationwide.

Local Teen in the Fight of Her Life – Derry Medical Center to Host Bone Marrow Drive

The holiday season is filled with a special sense of urgency for the family and friends of Janelle James, a fourteen year old resident of Derry. Like most kids her age, Janelle has many interests; she loves chorus, dancing and the drama club at Pinkerton Academy. In July however, life became less typical for the James family. Janelle was diagnosed with Acute Myeloblastic Leukemia (AML) and is currently undergoing intensive chemotherapy at the Children’s Hospital in Boston, MA. She is now in need of a bone marrow transplant.

On Monday, December 21 from 3 pm to 7 pm, Derry Medical Center will be hosting a bone marrow registry drive at their offices at the Overlook Medical Park at 6 Tsienneto Road. Area residents are encouraged to attend. This donor registry drive will be conducted by Be The Match RegistrySM and involves a simple cheek swab.

“For thousands of patients with life-threatening diseases, such as leukemia and lymphoma, a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor is their best or only hope for a cure,” explains Chris Mulcahy, spokesperson for the Be The Match Registry. “Patients like Janelle depend on the Be The Match Registry to find a match – and a second chance at life. Because less than four out of ten patients find the life-saving match they need, many more donors are needed to help increase the likelihood that patients will find a match. We are hoping that area residents will keep the true spirit of the holidays in mind and attend this registration drive to perhaps give the gift of life.”

Pre-registration is not required. Donors with diverse racial or ethnic backgrounds are especially critical, as patients in need of a transplant are most likely to match someone who shares their same race or ethnicity.

For more information about this drive, contact Julie McGinnis, physician assistant at Derry Medical Center at jmcginnis@derrymedicalcenter.com or by calling (603) 537-1370. Or, contact Chris Mulcahy at Be The Match Registry, by calling (617) 472-1109 or at cmulcah2@nmdp.org.

Derry Medical / Londonderry Family Practice Physicians Recognized for Providing Outstanding Care

Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (HPHC) recently named the health care team of physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners of Derry Medical Center and Londonderry Family Practice to the 2009 “Physician Group Honor Roll,” in recognition of their outstanding commitment to high quality care. In making this determination, HPHC reviewed performance data which showed that DMC/LFP was one of the top provider groups in the HPHC network.

In the HPHC report, the DMC/LFP health care providers were especially commended for their expertise in several clinical areas including: asthma management for adults; several aspects of diabetes monitoring and treatment; cholesterol management; screening programs for cancer including breast, cervical and colon cancer; well child and adolescent care; and the monitoring of patients with persistent medications.

When notified of the announcement, Daniel Waszkowski, M.D., F.A.A.F.P, board certified Family Practice physician at Londonderry Family Practice said, “Being named to the HPHC Physician Group Honor Roll is a tremendous accomplishment. Every day we strive to provide the very best care for our patients. To realize that our efforts exceed the standards set by the HPHC network is gratifying for us, and should be reassuring for our patients as well.”

The Honor Roll for adult and pediatric practices is based on performance against national HEDIS quality benchmarks, as reported by National Committee for Quality Assurance.

Under the leadership of team captain, Elisa Mecuro, DO, the DMC Breast Friends for Life team again participated in The Breast Cancer 3-Day held in Boston this summer. This year, the team was recognized as one of the top ten fundraising teams with donations topping $33,000!

Derry Medical Center has participated in The Breast Cancer 3-Day for the past 4 years. With help from many community supporters and lots of hard work, the group has raised over $110,000 for breast cancer research!

“We owe a big thank you to everyone who has supported this effort over the years,” says event coordinator, Julie McGinnis, Physician Assistant. “I feel we have truly made a difference....I hope everyone who has helped feels this way too.” This year, fundraising efforts included a gala silent auction and raffle in June as well as many smaller contests and promotions throughout the year.

Walkers this year included: Elisa Mercuro, Christina Michelson, Linda Bolling, Krista Pare, Connie LaFramboise, Judy Oak-Watson, Heather Shirley, Whitney Shirley, Paula Kiley, Donna Florio, Penny Provencher, and Kathy Fochetta. Crew members included Stephanie and Amanda Shirley.

Since its inception in 2003, more than $220 million has been raised through Breast Cancer 3-Day donations, contributions and sponsorships. Eighty-five percent of the net proceeds of this event go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Advancements in breast cancer research, treatment, education and prevention in the last 25 years have been touched by a Komen for the Cure grant. The remaining fifteen percent of net funds goes to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund to provide a permanent endowment for ongoing support of breast cancer initiatives.

WeightSense logoFirstLine Therapy Introduced at Derry Medical Center

Weight Sense at Derry Medical Center is expanding its program offerings and is showcasing the FirstLine Therapy Center for Excellence.

FirstLine Therapy is targeted to help patients looking to improve or maintain health as well as those challenged by a number of chronic conditions. “Many people struggle with health problems that are largely linked with life-style behaviors,” explains Susan Olson, RD, LD, CDE, Program Manager and Registered Dietitian. “Our goal is to help everyone achieve their health goals. We work with patients to address the underlying causes of their health issues which make this program especially appropriate for patients with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, metabolic syndrome and many other conditions.”

The FirstLine Therapy Program offers participants a combination of support and guidance for successful lifestyle changes using a whole foods, Mediterranean style diet, an exercise plan, stress management and the option of including medical foods and nutritional supplements. It consists of a 12-week program that offers comprehensive clinical tests including blood work and body index assessments. Patients meet with the trained staff to establish their goals and outline their program. For twelve weeks, participants track their progress, receive weekly counseling, and are educated on the tools and skills to incorporate these changes. Body composition tests and behavior diaries are used to monitor progress periodically. At the conclusion of the program, patients can choose to continue with a maintenance plan.

“FirstLine Therapy helps participants look at a lifestyle that helps prevent and manage disease for the long term and improves their overall health,” explains Olson. “We teach people how to make choices every day that will enhance their well-being. Research shows that achievable lifestyle modifications produce tremendous results without the use of costly prescription drugs”

For more information about FirstLine Therapy, call Sue Olson at 603-537-1393 or click here for more information.
