Study Shows Mediterranean Diet Prevents Heart Attack and Stroke

A recent New York Times article highlighted the findings of a  study published on The New England Journal of Medicine’s website that found that 30% of heart attacks, strokes and death from heart disease can be prevented in people with high risk if they switch to a Mediterranean diet.  Specifically, a so-called Mediterranean diet is rich in olive oil, nuts, beans, fish, fruits and vegetables.

This may seem like old news, but the startling results of the study demonstrated that maintaining this type of diet effected greater protection from heart attacks and stroke than merely relying on statin drugs, such as Lipitor.

This Year’s Flu is Very Widespread

Lots and lots of people are sick–whether from the flu, or other cold viruses, and they are calling their doctors for check-ups.  Fortunately, if you are a patient of Derry Medical Center, you can be seen the same day you call for an appointment.

It’s not too late to vaccinate. You can get your flu shot today!

We have plenty of flu vaccine for our patients!

If you thought it was too late to get a flu shot this season–it’s not too late!  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu season typically peaks in February and can last as late as May.

“We are encouraging all of our patients who have not yet been vaccinated to come in and get their flu shots now,” said Dr. Ted Brooks, Derry Medical Center’s Medical Director.  ”The flu is now widespread in New Hampshire, so protecting yourself now is very important.”  CDC Flu Activity Map
